Regeneration Case Studies
Longbenton, North Tyneside
This project saw us play a key role in assisting North Tyneside Council to kick start the £60m regeneration project by building three developments on the estate.
West Farm Wynd comprises 18, one-bedroom flats, created by removing the top floor of three, three storey blocks of former council flats and changing the facades.
Monks Park Way is a £5 million development of 104 homes for rent and low cost shared ownership sale which the Housing Corporation reported: "...has made a significant contribution to progressing the aims of the regeneration programme for the Longbenton estate, particularly in terms of retaining the community and acting as an exemplar for the local authority and the private sector."
Charnwood Avenue is 26 high quality two-bedroom bungalows and four two- bedroom houses, specifically designed to meet the needs of people whose homes were to be demolished to make way for new private housing or shopping and community facilities.
The success of regenerating Longbenton can be measured by statistics which show that between 1997 and 2001:
- The number of empty homes fell from 22% to 8%
- Unemployment dropped from 13% to 7%
- Reports of anti-social behaviour fell by 49%
- Burglary fell from 83 cases to 23
- Pupils achieving five or more A-G GCSEs rose from 83% to 92%.
