Basic Bank Accounts are current accounts without any overdraft or credit facilities - giving you the peace of mind that you can't get into debt.

You can have regular payments such as wages, pensions, tax credits and benefits paid into a basic bank account without being charged anything. You can also make regular payments such as direct debits and standing orders from most of the accounts but check when you ask about opening the account.

You can also have a debit card with your some basic bank accounts, allowing you to pay bills and get cashback in shops and use a cashcard to get money from cash machines. Some cash machines will charge you to withdraw money, but you will be told this in advance.

Basic Bank Accounts do not offer a cheque book facility and you will not be able to go into overdraft. If these things are important then you should perhaps consider a Current Account instead.

Remember: You can't trust your bank account!

Your bank account lies! When you check it, it only shows you a simple snap shot of the scene that day. It misses out what payments are due in or out, when direct debits are paid, when you need to do a shop. Never think that having cash in your bank account means your budget is balanced, though being overdrawn is a good indicator it isn't.
